Get in the Game By: John Stonestreet| Published: January 31, 2017 6:02 AM

When I was growing up, sports were considered a distraction. We had to finish our homework before we watched the game. In the age of smart phones, we’re getting distracted from our distractions!
According to the USA Today, the NBA is considering shortening basketball games to match our diminishing attention spans. NBA commissioner Adam Silver says millennials in particular can’t stick with games that go into overtime, so the league is toying with the idea of hard limits.
This on the heels of a Microsoft-commissioned study concluding the average person’s attention span is now shorter than that of a goldfish. Folks, if we can’t even pay attention to basketball, what must our prayer life look like? Our Scripture reading?
I’m not suggesting we give up smart phones or social media, but we do need to control them. The steady decline in attention is dehumanizing. And now that even sports have become too boring for fans, the case against constant technology use is a slam-dunk.
