Offering intercessory prayer means nothing other than Christians bringing one another into the presence of God, seeing each other under the cross of Jesus as poor human beings and sinners in need of grace. Then, everything about other people that repels me falls away. Then I see them in all their need, hardship, and distress. Their need and their sin become so heavy and oppressive to me that I feel as if they were my own, and I can do nothing else but bid: Lord, you yourself, you alone, deal with them according to your firmness and your goodness. - Dietrich Bon

SUNCOOK, S.C.. —  Betty Lynn Monroe believes her dog, Rambler, has had a conversion comparable to what humans experience. Monroe says that for months Rambler has been sitting in a corner and listening to her home Bible study group discuss the Bible.  Then, last week during the prayer time, Rambler ran into their midst, lay down on the floor and looked up at them with “a look of pure regret and sadness,” Monroe says. “It was as sincere as anything I’ve seen among humans at the altar at church.” The group laid hands on Rambler and prayed that God would make him a “born-again creature.” Rambler then leapt up and pranced around the living room. “It was the most joyous display of freedom in Christ we’d ever seen,” says one woman. “I teared up.” Since his “conversion,” Rambler is more helpful. We tend to think of them as journeys of ascent, like climbing to a summit. But are they, really? Aren’t adventures actually journeys of  descent ? And, actually, doesn’t therein lay their power? Our culture teaches that ascending  brings us life : ascending in school; our careers; our social standing; in the sizes of our houses and our bank accounts. Our King, Jesus Christ, teaches the opposite. He teaches that we come alive, instead, by descending. And he teaches that we come alive by listening to God, trusting God, and relying on God.
